The UH Mānoa Jazz Ensemble consists primarily of undergraduate students from many different majors. The ensemble maintains a full instrumentation for the study and performance of the finest jazz and contemporary standards. Auditions for the Jazz Ensemble are held at the beginning of each semester.
Through rehearsal and performance of a variety of carefully selected jazz ensemble literature, students will increase their knowledge and experience base with focus on professional outcomes and standards. All University of Hawai‘i system students are eligible to participate in the Jazz Ensemble pending a successful audition.
Ensemble placement and repertoire/part assignments are determined by the director and are intended to provide the most appropriate educational experience for each individual student’s development.
The University of Hawai‘i Jazz Ensemble includes the traditional big-band orchestration:
5 Saxophones (2 Alto, 2 Tenor, 1 Bari)
4/5 Trombones (3 Tenor, 1 Bass)
4/5 Trumpets
5 Rhythm (Pno, Bass, Guitar, Drums, Aux Perc)
Additional membership/performers are at the director’s discretion.
Audition Info
Auditions will be held during the first week of class. Each student will be required to perform a prepared piece. They will also be asked to improvise and sight read. Rhythm section players will be asked to demonstrate various styles (ie swing, latin, funk) in addition to performing a prepared piece, improvising, and sight reading. Please note that registration in the class does not guarantee a position in the Jazz Ensemble.
