The Chinese Ensemble focuses on the regional folk music style of southern China. Also known as silk and bamboo tradition, sizhu, this type of music relies on spontaneous additions of melodic and rhythmic embellishments to the basic melody.
The course introduces playing techniques of selected string and wind instruments such as erhu (二胡), sanxian (三弦), zhongruan (中阮), dixi (笛子), and xiao (箫). Students are expected to learn the basic repertoire, performance practice of the ensemble, and to understand the stylistic characteristics of this regional tradition.
