Aloha! This page serves as our “master post” for all Lyon Arboretum community classes for the Winter and Spring of 2023. More classes will be added as details are finalized.
Garden Club of Honolulu (GCH) members and provisional members: classes hosted in cooperation with GCH will have “GCH” in the title.
Refund policy: The deadline to request a refund is the Friday before the week of the class. (For example, if the class was Saturday the 14th, the deadline for a refund would be Friday the 6th.) After this point, no refund requests will be processed. Please note that Eventbrite’s fees are non-refundable. Mahalo. Our full refund policy can be found here (PDF).

Class: Spring Floral Easter Basket
Description: Come join the fun of making an Easter Basket!
Baskets, flowers, greenery and ribbons will be available for you to create your own Easter Basket! Let your creativity flow as you put together a Spring Basket! It will be in time for your own Easter festivities.
Please bring clippers. Flowers and greenery from your garden are appreciated.
Pokey Richardson and Tina Semenza are floral designers from The Garden Club of Honolulu. They have been doing Easter baskets together since their grown children were small.
What to wear/bring: – (Required) Comfortable shoes with good traction – Mask to wear in the Visitors Center and other indoor areas (Optional) – Water bottle (optional but recommended)

Class: Fantastic Fungi: Identification, Cultivation, and Ecology
Description: The fantastic world of fungi is all around us but hidden to most! Learn about the identification, cultivation, and ecology of Hawaiian mushrooms.
About the instructor: Eli Livezey studied Ecology at the Evergreen State College in Washington for his undergraduate degree. While in the PNW he learned to forage mushrooms and was hooked.
Please come prepared to enjoy the Arboretum in rain or shine. We recommend
– Required: Comfortable shoes with good traction
– Optional but recommended: Mask to wear in the Visitors Center
– Optional but recommended: Long pants or leggings (to keep mosquitoes off)
– Optional but recommended: Mosquito repellent if possible.
– Optional but recommended: Rain jacket or poncho.
– Optional: Water bottle and a hat with a brim if the weather has been hot and sunny

Class: “Don’t Ever Just Take a Photograph of the First Thing You See!”
Description: If you want a photographer who can really teach you to take great botanical photographs, call Linny Morris! Lucky for us, Linny Morris has agreed to teach our January photography class. Linny will share her enthusiasm for creating great botanical shots by encouraging students to get close, to shoot from different angles, to find the light and look for shadows! We’ll spend time both in the classroom and outside in the Arboretum.
This class is brought to you in cooperation with the Garden Club of Honolulu.
This class will be held both indoors and outdoors at the Arboretum.
We strongly encourage all participants to wear their masks in the classroom and other indoor areas.
What to bring:
– This class will use your cellphone’s camera. (Please spend the time to become familiar with your cellphone’s camera before class)
– If you have a cellphone, Linny suggests that you download “Adobe Photoshop Express” and watch the tutorial before attending the class.

Class: Yoga and Mindful Hike (January)
Description: Science has documented that both being in nature and mindfulness practices such as yoga and meditation are good for your health. Experience these benefits yourself by joining us on a mindfulness-based guided hike through Lyon Arboretum followed by yoga in a beautiful studio with stunning views of Mānoa Valley. Class size is limited, so sign up early. Each yoga and mindful hike session focuses on a different theme and expression. Previous yoga experience is not necessary.
Please bring a yoga mat, water, journal and pencil/pen (if you want to journal your experiences after class).
What to wear/bring:
– Yoga mat
– Mask to wear in the Visitors Center and other indoor areas
– Comfortable shoes with good traction
– Long pants (to keep mosquitoes off. Optional: a light jacket or longsleeved outer shirt.)
– Mosquito repellent if possible
– Rain jacket or poncho
– Writing materials (optional but recommended)

Class: Lauhala Bracelet Weaving
Description: Please join us for a morning of lauhala weaving with Hawaiian cultural practitioner Stacie Segovia. Participants will enjoy weaving a bracelet from lauhala that has been harvested and prepped especially for you.
Stacie started weaving in 2010 with Kumu Gwen Kamisugi and shortly after also learned to weave from Kumu Pohaku Kaho’ohanohano. She teaches the haumana of Nā Lālā o Ka Pūhala and also offers weekly classes at Na Kupuna Makamae. She is one of the Kumu at the Kauluhiwaolele Maui Fiber Arts Conference held every year at Ka’anapali Beach Hotel. The haumana of Nā Lālā o Ka Pūhala spends Saturdays planting and caring for puhala at various locations. Stacie’s dream is to attend cultural events where everyone is wearing a traditional papale lauhala!

Saturday, March 4. Eco-dyeing class with Hawaii Handweavers’ Hui.
Introduction to Eco-Dyeing – March 4, 2023. 10:00 am – 12:00 pm (Click here to show/hide)
Class: Introduction to Eco-Dyeing
Description: Eco-dyeing is a technique that uses the natural pigments of plants to imprint color and images onto fabric. We will use fresh plants and a non-toxic iron solution to print onto silk fabric which we will then gently steam. The resulting images are beautiful and unpredictable revealing themselves only after rinsing in clear water.
About your instructor: Gina is a longtime hand-spinner, weaver and dyer. She currently teaches spinning and Eco-dyeing at the DAC (Downtown Art Center) in Honolulu.
