As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, many members of our community find themselves facing urgent financial pressure. Our UH students are especially vulnerable. The University of Hawaiʻi Foundation (UHF) has created the Urgent Student Relief Fund to assist our students during these trying times.

Read more about the Urgent Student Relief Fund on the UHF website.

Finally, if you are able to give, please consider making a gift to help others in our UH ʻohana.

Kōkua aku, kōkua mai. Pēlā ka nohona ʻohana: Help others and accept help. That is the family way.

Your donation will greatly support the mission and programs of the Harold L. Lyon Arboretum. There are a few ways to donate. Take a look below to learn how you can help.

Make a general donation to Lyon Arboretum

Your donation will support our ongoing activities, projects, and more. Money donated this way may be distributed among the Arboretum’s departments.

If you wish to donate to our endowment itself, please contact us directly. You can call our office at (808) 988-0456 or email our Acting Director, Nellie Sugii, at

Support Lyon’s Education Department

Lyon’s Education Department oversees guided tours, school field trips, adult classes, university field trips, volunteers, internships, and outreach.

If you had a stellar docent-led hike or want to support our work with Hawaii’s keiki, please consider donating to the education department.

If you have questions about donating to the Education Department, contact Education Manager Raedelle Van Fossen: or (808) 988-0461.

Support Lyon’s Grounds and Collections Department

The Grounds and Collections Department cares for our living plant collection, builds and maintains our trails, and manages the records of our collections.

You can also support the Grounds and Collections Department by donating directly to its endowment.

If you have any questions about donating to the Grounds and Collections Department, please contact Grounds and Collections Manager Liloa Dunn directly: or (808) 988-0466.

Support the Hawaiian Rare Plant Program

Lyon Arboretum’s conservation work is carried out in two labs: the Micropropagation Laboratory and our Seed Conservation Laboratory. Together they make up our Hawaiian Rare Plant Program (HRPP). The HRPP works to save Hawaiʻi’s most critically endangered native plants. You can support our conservation efforts by donating to one or both of our labs!

Questions about donating to the HRPP can be directed to HRPP Manager Nellie Sugii: or (808) 988-8956.

The Micropropagation Lab

Micropropagation is a powerful tool in conserving endangered plant species. It is especially valuable when conserving extremely rare plants, plants with unhealthy plant stock, or plants with seeds that are difficult to store or germinate.

The Seed Conservation Lab

Support the conservation of native Hawaiian plants through seed research and seed banking at Lyon Arboretum. Lyon’s Seed Conservation Lab is also responding to the Rapid ʻŌhiʻa Death (ROD) crisis afflicting our state.

Support Lyon’s Horticulture Department

The Horticulture Department processes and cares for new plant materials, works with Grounds and Collections to care for our living plant collections, and organizes our plant sales. The Horticulture Department also works with our Education Department to provide living plants for outreach events.

If you have any questions about donating to the Horticulture Department, you can email Horticulture Manager Tim Kroessig at or call his office at (808) 988-0472.
