Concert Choir

This student choir, led by the University’s director of choral activities, rehearses three times weekly and performs choral repertoire from across the spectrum. The Concert Choir forms the backbone of the UHChoirs and creates the core of the mass chorus when the UHChoirs join the UH Symphony.

The majority of students who sing in choruses in the UHM Music Department are members of this ensemble. Students are expected to have some musical background and need to attend a short hearing at the start of each academic year.

About Auditions

Chamber Singers

This ensemble is the University’s most select vocal ensemble and frequently represents the University outside of our Mānoa campus. The Chamber Singers sing repertoire from a wide variety of genres and often joins other organizations around the state for collaborative events. Membership in Chamber Singers is limits to the more advanced and independent musicians, regardless of degree program. Auditions are held in August of each academic year and, in the event of mid-year vacancies, again in January.

Like Concert Choir, Chamber Singers is led by Dr. Felipe.

University Chorus

UChorus, led by Dr. Alec Schumacker, is a choir of singers from all corners of the University and surrounding community. Rehearsals offer basic vocal instruction, music-reading skills, and preparation for all-choir concerts each semester.

The group rehearses on Tuesday evenings and is open to all regardless of choral experience.

Hawaiian Chorus

Led by Hawaiian choral expert and UH music lecturer Nola A. Nāhulu, this chamber ensemble is devoted to the unique Hawaiian choral tradition. The choir is the only collegiate choir in the world dedicated to the performance, preservation, and promotion of the Hawaiian choral tradition. Rehearsals infuse traditional choral rehearsal with opportunities to learn about Hawaiian history, language, and culture.

UH Mānoa’s Hawaiian Chorus performs frequently around the community and often collaborates with other ensembles on O‘ahu. All students are welcome to join the Hawaiian Chorus regardless of experience.
