HON 303: Civic Engagement & Social Justice

Focus: ETH (Contemporary Ethical Issues) & WI (Writing Intensive)

CRN 87700: TR 1:30-2:45 online

Instructor: Dr. Jayme Scally

History has repeatedly shown how small groups of citizens—often suffering oppression—can come together to demand change and improve society, while power holders resist in favor of maintaining the status quo. With this in mind, this Honors course will examine theory and action related to citizenship. Students will gain familiarity with the terms and theory related to civic engagement as we examine social movements from the 20th and 21st centuries, in the US and abroad. We will pay particular attention to the forms of these movements, exploring different leadership and power sharing dynamics, how media can help or hinder, the ways in which art can work toward achieving social justice, and more.
