Current UHM and Transfer Students: Apply to the 2-Year Program
We’re so glad you’re interested in joining Honors. Many talented UHM students find Honors as continuing first- or second-year students, or as transfer students. Joining Honors can be an incredible opportunity to turbo-charge your degree program, and you’re just in time to start your journey as a continuing or transfer student.

Two-Year Program Basics
Find out in more detail about our two-year program here. Program requirements at a glance:
- One Honors junior seminar or another upper-division Honors course
- Senior project of independent research or creative work, mentored by a UHM faculty member
- Honors classes can also fulfill General Education and / or major and minor requirements.
- With regular Honors advising, most continuing and transfer students can expect to successfully complete an Honors degree in no more than two years.
Eligibility
- Current UHM students and transfer students
- Cumulative college GPA of 3.5 or higher
- At least 3 semesters remaining at UHM
Typical Student Profile
- Has had a positive college experience including high academic accomplishment
- Motivated to experience a challenging Honors program
- Interested to pursue senior project of independent and original work
Application Process
- Complete application including personal statement, list of extracurricular materials, and one letter of recommendation
- Use our Mākālei portal and apply with your @hawaii.edu email
- Schedule an interview with an Honors faculty member. Your application cannot be processed before you meet with an Honors faculty member.
- After your interview: complete the Department Approval Form (available on the Mākālei portal)
Application Dates
- June 15: For students entering UHM / joining Honors in Fall
- November 1: For students entering UHM / joining Honors in Spring
- Application dates include a meeting with an Honors faculty advisor
Honors Interview / On-boarding
For continuing and transfer students, the Honors interview is a chance to learn more about Honors and see if it is a good fit for your goals. We’re sure you’ll have a lot of questions! We’re happy to discuss your current program and help you decide if Honors is a good fit.
