LYON COMMUNITY CLASSES

Aloha! This page serves as our “master post” for all Lyon Arboretum community classes. More classes will be added as details are finalized. Registration is via Eventbrite.

Refund policy: The deadline to request a refund is usually the Friday before the week of the class. (For example, if the class was Saturday the 14th, the deadline for a refund would be Friday the 6th.) However, please check with the Education Department as there may be exceptions to our policy due to the publication of the class date on Eventbrite.

After this point, no refund requests will be processed. Please note that Eventbrite’s fees are non-refundable. Mahalo. Our full refund policy can be found here (PDF).

Wednesdays, September 25th – November 13th

Train to be a docent at the Arboretum to lead small groups and share the history, culture, and of course about the beautiful collection of plants with visitors to Lyon.

The 8-week course will take place every Wednesday from Sep 25 2024 from 09:00 AM11:00 AM and ends November 13th.

During this training class, you will have the opportunity to enhance your knowledge about the diverse plant life at Lyon Arboretum and develop your skills as a docent. Whether you are a nature enthusiast or looking to volunteer your time, this event is perfect for anyone interested in learning more about the flora and fauna of Hawaii. Don’t miss out on this unique opportunity to connect with nature and make a difference in your community. Sign up now and be part of the Lyon ʻohana!

Requirements for the class: You must be physically able to lead tours around the Arboretum, which has uneven trails. You must be ok to work in conditions that include mosquitoes and inclement weather.

Class Date: Every Wednesday, starting 9/25/24 and ends 11/13/24

Class Sessions: 9/25, 10/2, 10/9, 10/16, 10/23, 10/30, 11/6, 11/13

Time: 9:00 am – 11:00 am

Cost: $150 – A refund will be given upon successful completion of the program and commit to leading 5 tours.

Instructors: Education Manager, Raedelle Van Fossen with guest instructors/experts from the various departments at Lyon.

Refunds: Refunds if cancelling enrollment will be given up to 9/18/24. Fees cannot be transferred to another class.

Click Here for Details: Aloha ‘Aina- A Philosophy Shift on How We View These Islands

An introductory lecture on the cultural and ecological importance of native plants and the value they have for all of us. Will also go into greater detail on a few select species of plants and the best ways to care for them. 

Instructor bio
Rick Barboza is a dedicated conservationist with a deep-rooted love for Hawaii’s natural heritage. A Kamehameha Schools graduate (1993), he earned a Bachelor of Arts inn Zoology from the University of Hawai’i (1999), focusing on the state’s unique plants and animals. In 1999, Barboza co-founded Hui Ku Maoli Ola, a company specializing in native Hawaiian plants and landscaping. His passion lies in restoring these precious ecosystems to urban and residential areas, using species that would have naturally thrived there.

Saturday, October 12th

Click Here for Details: Fermentation of Local Ingredients with Bitter Root Brewery

Join us at Lyon Arboretum for a fun and educational event all about fermentation! Bitter Root Brewery will be sharing their expertise on the basics of fermentation using locally sourced ingredients. Whether you’re a seasoned homebrewer or just curious about the process, this event is perfect for anyone interested in learning more about fermentation.

Time: 9:00 am – 11:00 am

Cost: $35.00

Instructors: Nicolas C. and Nicolas B. of Team BRB are graduate students at the University of Hawaiʻi at Manoa. They started a brewing business through a fermentation class. They love to teach and are happy to share their knowledge about fermentation and support the local economy.

What to Wear/Bring: 

    • Notebook and pen/pencil
    • Rain jacket/umbrella (to get from the parking lot to the classroom in case it rains)
    • Mosquito repellent – they bite even indoors!
    • Water bottle (optional but recommended)

Saturday, October 19th

Science has documented that both being in nature and mindfulness practices such as yoga and meditation are good for your health. Experience these benefits yourself by joining us on a mindfulness-based guided hike through Lyon Arboretum followed by yoga in a beautiful studio with stunning views of Mānoa Valley. Class size is limited, so sign up early. Each yoga and mindful hike session focuses on a different theme and expression. Previous yoga experience is not necessary.

Our yoga classes are usually in the morning, but join us for an afternoon yoga session in October.

Time: 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm

Cost: $35.00

Instructor: Liz Kashinsky

What to Wear/Bring: 

    • Yoga mat (required)
    • Comfortable, closed-toe shoes with good traction (required) You should be prepared to walk on uneven terrain.
    • Long pants (to keep mosquitoes off. Optional: a light jacket or long-sleeved outer shirt.
    • Bug Spray (optional but recommended)
    • Rain jacket or poncho
    • Water bottle (optional but recommended)

Location: The yoga class will be held at the upstairs Visitor Center classroom with a hike through the Lyon Arboretum grounds.

Join us at Lyon Arboretum on Friday, Oct 25 2024 at 09:30 AM for a fun and creative event. Learn how to create beautiful succulent gardens using reclaimed wood containers. In this hands-on workshop, you will be provided with boxes made from reclaimed wood and turn them into stunning mini planters for your succulents. Get your hands dirty and let your creativity bloom! Click Here for Details: Eco Dye Workshop with Gina Taylor

Join us for a hands-on workshop in eco-dyeing, a fascinating technique that harnesses the natural pigments of plants to create beautiful, unique designs on fabric. Under the expert guidance of Gina Taylor, you’ll explore the art of eco-dyeing using locally harvested flowers and other plant materials.

What You’ll Learn:

    • Introduction to Eco Dyeing: Understand the principles of eco-dyeing and the variety of plants that can be used for natural pigment extraction.
    • Materials Provided: Gina will supply all necessary materials, including an array of plant matter and high-quality silk or linen cloths, perfect for creating long, elegant pieces.
    • Step-by-Step Process: Learn how to arrange and roll the plant materials with the fabric, preparing them for dyeing.
    • Steaming Technique: Discover the steaming process that imprints the natural dyes onto the fabric, resulting in stunning, one-of-a-kind patterns.

Time: 9:00 am – 12:00 pm

Cost: $50.00 (Class fee + materials)

Instructors: Gina Taylor is highly regarded as a skilled weaver and beloved crafts instructor. She participates in craft exhibits and competitions and organizes these events in Honolulu.

Wednesday, December 11th

Click Here for Details: Holiday Fresh Wreath Class with Hui Hana Lei

Join us for a festive wreath-making class where you’ll craft your own holiday wreath using fresh greens and foliage. You’ll start with a 12-inch wire base and adorn it with fragrant pine, juniper, and some native plants to create a beautiful, aromatic gift for yourself or a loved one. Celebrate the season by inviting friends and family to join in the fun. With a class size limited to 12 participants, be sure to register early to secure your spot!

Time: 9:00 am – 11:00 pm

Cost: $65.00 (Class fee + materials)

Instructors:

The Hui Hana Lei Volunteers are dedicated to crafting traditional Hawaiian-style lei and fulfilling orders received through Lyon Arboretum. Our passion for natural materials has led us to create various items for sale at Lyon’s Spring and Fall sales. In the Fall, we specialize in creating unique wreaths using dried and fresh materials. These materials are either grown in our yards or gathered from Lyon Arboretum and various locations around Oahu.

What to Wear/Bring: 

    • Floral clippers or scissors (required)
    • Small ornaments or decorative items to add to your wreath (optional)
    • Bug Spray (optional but recommended)
    • Rain jacket, poncho, or umbrella (for walking from and to the parking lot)
    • Water bottle (optional but recommended)

Location: Upstairs Visitor Center classroom

In this class, we will craft our own holiday décor using freshly harvested greens from the island, enhanced with festive embellishments for the holiday season.

Time: 9:30 pm – 12:00 pm

Cost: $55.00

Instructors: Cee Simmons, a creative naturalist born in Hawaiʻi, is renowned for her creativity and expertise in weaving hall, which she personally harvests. She draws inspiration from the islands’ natural resources.
Stephanie Johnson, a seasoned floral design practitioner, brings years of experience in competitive floral design. She has showcased her work at The Garden Club of Honolulu flower shows.

What to Wear/Bring: 

    • Comfortable, closed-toe shoes with good traction (optional). You should be prepared to walk on uneven terrain (to and from your car )
    • Long pants to keep mosquitoes off (optional)
    • Bug Spray (optional but recommended)
    • Rain jacket or poncho (In case of rain from the car to the classroom)
    • Water bottle (optional but recommended)

Location: The yoga class will be held in the downstairs Visitor Center classroom
