Message from the Chief

Chief Andrew BlackAloha and welcome to our website.

The Department of Public Safety at the University of Hawaiʻi is located on the outskirts of downtown Honolulu in picturesque Mānoa Valley.

Our mission is to provide a safe environment for our students, faculty, staff, and visitors. The members of our team are an important part of this endeavor. They are dedicated professionals: knowledgeable, highly skilled, safety, security, and emergency responders who strive to maintain a safe and welcoming educational setting. Our department’s core values are integrity, respect, equality, professionalism and commitment to service. Each member of the department adheres to these values in the performance of their duties.

However, the most effective crime prevention efforts also include a partnership with our community based on mutual trust, cooperation and collaboration between the Department of Public Safety and you.

As a member of the campus community, you are an important component in ensuring that our campus and all community members remain safe. We encourage you to explore our website and read our crime prevention information which will help you assist us in maintaining a secure, productive learning environment. As Chief, I am open to new ideas, collaborative engagement and innovative approaches to public safety now and in the future. Please follow us on Facebook and X (formerly known as Twitter) for safety tips and regular updates from our department. I welcome feedback and suggestions from the community. Feel free to contact me at ablack22@hawaii.edu.

We at the Department of Public Safety and our community can work together to keep the University of Hawaiʻi a safe place to live, work, and learn.

Thank you for visiting our site.

With aloha,

Chief Andrew Black
