Mānoa Opportunities

14th Annual Weinman Symposium to honor Dutch geneticist

International leaders in various fields of cancer research, science and medicine will convene at the 14th Annual Weinman Symposium, January 25–27 at the University of Hawaiʻi Cancer Center. Renowned Dutch geneticist, Hans Clevers, will be honored with the Weinman Award for developing human organoids that predict function of rare cell types. The event is free and open to the public. American Public Health Association and Kaiser Permanente Community Health Fellowship

The APHA/Kaiser Permanente Community Health Fellowship aims to build diverse, underrepresented public health leaders committed to improving health of vulnerable communities and supporting health equity. Aimed at early career professionals who earned a MPH or doctorate degree in Public Health May 2022-August 2023, fellows receive a $120,000 stipend for 12 months beginning September 5th, to support/lead projects and partnerships addressing upstream determinants of health/social health across Kaiser Permanente communities. Extended deadline to apply is February 6, 2023, 12 noon.

Papua New Guinea Fellowship

The Ambassador Mary Olmsted Fellowship Fund provides financial support to Papua New Guinea citizens who are pursuing a Graduate Division program at UH Mānoa. Funding may be used for tuition, books, fees, and room and board. Award is for the 2023-2024 school year. For more details and to apply, please visit the STAR Scholarship site, use keyword “Olmsted” to search for the award. Deadline is February 15, 2023.

Project Funding for Undergraduate Students ($5,000–$10,000)

The Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) coordinates and promotes research and creative work opportunities for UH Mānoa undergraduate students in all disciplines. UROP invites students conducting or planning to conduct faculty-mentored research or creative work to submit a proposal for Project Funding, which provides funds to cover materials, supplies, travel, hourly stipend, and other project-related costs. The Spring 2023 deadline is March 3rd, 5:00pm. Register to attend information sessions to learn more or learn about other opportunities offered by UROP!

PhD Fellowship for Study/Research in Japan

The Kobe College Corporation Japan Education Exchange Graduate Fellowship supports one PhD student for research or study in Japan. Applicants must be a U.S. citizen at time of award, have completed their qualifying exams, advanced to candidacy status, and be able to demonstrate research level Japanese language competency. Award is $30,000 for one year beginning no earlier than May 15, 2023 and no later than September 30, 2023. Deadline to apply is March 13, 2023.

Entering Research & Creative Work (ERC) Funding for Undergraduate Students ($1,500–$3,000)

The Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) coordinates and promotes research and creative work opportunities for UH Mānoa undergraduate students in all disciplines. ERC funding is intended for students early in their academic careers, with little to no research or creative work experience, to get introduced to and explore research and creative work with a faculty mentor. UROP provides up to $1500 per semester and up to $3000 for two consecutive semesters. The Spring 2023 application deadline is 5:00 PM, April 20th. “Intersecting Asias: Reflections on Connections and Mobility”: 34th Asian Studies Graduate Student Conference, April 27–28, 2023

The School of Pacific and Asian Studies and the Department of Asian Studies invites proposals for papers, performances, and panels that seek to move beyond the ‘traditional’ regions of Asia for the 34th annual Asian Studies Graduate Student Conference, held in-person at the Center for Korean Studies on April 27–28, 2023. Presentation Funding for Undergraduate Students ($2000–$5000)

The Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) coordinates and promotes research and creative work opportunities for UH Mānoa undergraduate students in all disciplines. UROP invites students who are conducting or have conducted faculty-mentored research or creative work to submit a proposal for Presentation Funding, which provides funds to present their project or work at a local, national, or international conference/event, either in-person or virtually. UROP strongly encourages interested students to apply three months prior to the event.
