Frances Davis Teaching Assistant Award Nominations Open

The Frances Davis Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching for a Graduate Assistant recognizes excellence in undergraduate teaching by a TA at UH Mānoa who demonstrates exemplary instructional activities. TAs with a teaching assignment within the previous two academic years are eligible to be nominated. Consider nominating a TA to show your appreciation and have them recognized. Nominations are due by December 1, 2022.

Peter V. Garrod Graduate Mentoring Award Nominations Open

Graduate Division and the Graduate Council invite nominations for the Peter V. Garrod Distinguished Graduate Mentoring Award, recognizing one faculty member who demonstrates an outstanding career of mentoring graduate students at UH Mānoa. A nomination from both a student and a faculty member must be submitted in order for a nominee to be considered. Nominations are due by December 1, 2022.

Botany in Action Fellowship

The Botany in Action Fellowship program at Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens fosters the development of PhD students conducting plant-based scientific research and who are committed to educational outreach. Fellows receive $5,000 for their research; an all-expenses paid trip to Phipps for science outreach training; and subsequent opportunities to connect their research with the public through programs, exhibits, and other outreach venues. Proposal deadline is January 6, 2023.

Financial Support for Graduate Studies/Research in Chinese Culture

The Chun Ku & Soo Yong Huang Foundation Fund promotes the study of and interest in Chinese culture. Financially supporting graduate students studying fields of importance to life and development in China and who have service in China as their goal; award is for the 2023–2024 school year. Applicants must be in a Graduate Division program and in good academic standing. Search the STAR Scholarship site using keywords “Huang Foundation” to find the application. Submission deadline is February 15, 2023.

Knauss Marine Policy Fellowship

The Knauss Fellowship supports graduate students interested in ocean, coastal and Great Lakes resources and related national policy decisions. Fellows are matched with hosts in legislative and executive branches of government for a one-year fellowship ($68,000 stipend) in D.C. beginning February 1, 2024. Students from natural science, social science, and law graduate and professional programs are encouraged to apply. Deadline is February 16, 2023. Graduate Scholarship for Social Justice & Community Building

The Semura Graduate Student Scholarship is open to full-time graduate students enrolled in any Graduate Division program and in good academic standing. Applicants must be able to demonstrate commitment, research, and advocacy toward social justice and/or intercultural communications, and potential to build community (locally or globally). Scholarship is for the 2023–2024 academic year. Applications are available via the STAR Scholarship site using keyword “Semura”. Deadline to apply is February 15, 2023.

UROP Opportunities

Presentation Funding for Undergraduate Students ($2000–$5000)

UROP coordinates and promotes research and creative work opportunities for UHM undergraduate students in all disciplines. UROP invites students who are conducting or have conducted faculty-mentored research or creative work to submit a proposal for Presentation Funding, which provides funds to present their project or perform at a local, national, or international conference/event, in-person or virtually.
