Commencement Student Speaker Auditions

The 2022 Mid-Year Commencement Exercise will include an address to the graduating class by a Fall 2022 candidate. The deadline to sign up to audition is Wednesday, October 19th via the Student Speaker Google form. A copy of your speech is due to graduate@hawaii.edu by Thursday, October 20, 2022 at 11:59 p.m. The audition will take place on Friday, October 21, 2022 at 4:30 p.m.

Mirikitani Outstanding Dissertation Award – Deadline Oct. 15th

The Clifford K. Mirikitani & John M. Mirikitani Outstanding Dissertation Award recognizes exceptional work by doctoral students toward their dissertations with hopes of encouraging extraordinary research. Applicants must be currently enrolled in a Graduate Division program and have submitted Form II to Graduate Division. Applications require an endorsement by the dissertation committee chair. To apply as a nominee, visit the STAR Scholarship site and use the keyword “Mirikitani Dissertation”. The application deadline is October 15, 2022. Recommendations are due October 22, 2022.

Recruiting Student Participants for Economic Experiments

Researchers study economic decision-making in a computer lab on campus or online. Earn money just for showing up on time, then earn more based on your decisions during the experiment! Participants make individual or group choices, which determine their payoffs. These experiments are fun and educational, and no prior knowledge of economics is required! Duration: 1 to 3 hours. All experiments have been approved by the Human Studies Program. To participate, register at: https://manoa.hawaii.edu/econexp/. CASTING CALL: Dance, Dance, Dance by Haruki Murakami

Set in Hokkaido, Tokyo, and Hawaiʻi, Dance, Dance, Dance opens doors to “other” places. Represented by the warped, non-linear space-time of the Dolphin Hotel in Sapporo and an old multi-storied building in Downtown Honolulu, these “other” spaces contain the potential for personal healing by offering characters and audiences alike a chance to restore, rebuild, and rediscover a sense of self. Funding for Research in Japan

The Japan Society for the Promotion of Science is the largest funding agency for academic research in Japan. They provide fellowships for PhD students and postdoctorates in all fields of research: social science, humanities, and science. Deadlines vary. If you are interested in researching in Japan, register for a virtual info session on October 25, 2022, 12:00 – 1:00 p.m., and hear from program staff about fellowship benefits and how to apply.

Ford Foundation Fellowship Programs

The Ford Foundation seeks to increase the diversity among higher education faculty by increasing ethnic and racial diversity as well as professoriate who will use diversity for enriching education. Predoctoral, dissertation, and postdoctoral fellowships are awarded annually and range between $27,000 to $50,000. Application deadlines vary by program between December 8 to 15, 2022. Register to join a virtual info session on October 21, 3:00 – 4:15 p.m. HST, to learn about the fellowship programs and how to develop a competitive application.

NSF S-STEM STRIDE Program – Scholarships now available

The NSF S-STEM STRIDE program at the University of Hawaiʻi at Manoa supports undergraduates and graduates in a Biology-related program to expand their awareness, and skill set, into Data Science techniques, methods and projects. This program has two components: (1) provide tuition/support (scholarships) to talented students who have financial need and (2) Provide professional development and training opportunities to add Data Science to your professional skill set as a future biologist. UROP Opportunities

New Entering Research & Creative Work (ERC) Funding for Undergraduate Students ($1,500-$3,000)

UROP coordinates and promotes research and creative work opportunities for UHM undergraduate students in all disciplines. UROP invites students who are conducting or have conducted faculty-mentored research or creative work to submit a proposal for Presentation Funding, which provides funds to present their project or perform at a local, national, or international conference/event, in-person or virtually. UROP strongly encourages interested students to apply three months prior to the event. Register to attend information sessions! Learn about other opportunities offered by UROP!

Project Funding for Undergraduate Students ($5,000-$10,000): Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP )

UROP coordinates and promotes research and creative work opportunities for UHM undergraduate students in all disciplines. UROP invites students who are conducting or have conducted faculty-mentored research or creative work to submit a proposal for Presentation Funding, which provides funds to present their project or perform at a local, national, or international conference/event, in-person or virtually.
