Approximately 50 women in Hawaii are diagnosed with invasive cervical cancer and another 6 women die from the disease each year. HPV can cause six different types of cancers in both men and women. Each year in the United States, about 12,000 women get cervical cancer and about 4,000 are expected to die from it.

HPV vaccines are safe and effective. All preteens should receive the three dose series of HPV vaccine at age 11 or 12 years. Teen boys and girls who did not get the vaccine when they were younger should get it now. Young women can get HPV vaccine through age 26, and young men can get vaccinated through age 21.

Findings from a recent survey conducted by the University of Hawaii Cancer Center and John A. Burns School of Medicine validated the important role of both physicians and parents in getting our keiki vaccinated. Join us and spread the word to your family and friends. HPV vaccination is cancer prevention.
