Cross-listing Terminology
Definitions for sections offered simultaneously, in the same place, at the same day/time, and with the same instructor
Concurrent: Multiple sections of exactly the same course (subject and number) meeting at least once/week at the same time and place.
- Sections have the same subject code and course number
- Sections have the same title, description, content, instructor(s), learning outcomes, readings/assignments, and grading rubric
- Sections typically have different recitation or lab sessions in addition to the shared meeting time
- Ex: HIST 151 sections 001-006, sharing the same lecture meeting days/times, same instructor, different recitation meeting day(s)/times
Cross-listed: Sections from different subject codes but same title and description offered together, meeting at the same time and place
- Sections have different subject codes; may have different course numbers
- Sections have the same title, description, content, instructor(s), learning outcomes, readings/assignments, and grading rubric
- Ex: SOC 318 and WS 318, “Women & Social Policy”
- Ex: SOC 494, ES 489, SOCS 489: “Social Sciences Internship”
- Cross-listings are approved by UHM form process and appear in the Catalog
Dual-Listed with Extension: Sections that are listed in both Fall and Fall Extension, or both Spring and Spring Extension.
- Could also be concurrent and/or cross-listed
- Ex: SOC 251 offered in Spring 2021 (CRN 94728, term 202130) and Spring 2021 Extension (CRN 3120, term 202133)
Stacked Undergraduate with Graduate Course: An undergraduate section and a graduate section offered together, meeting at the same time and place (Requires only Chair/Dean’s approval)
- Guidelines
- Sections in the group have the same subject code, but different course numbers
But: could also include cross-listings with other subject codes - Sections could have different titles, but content “must overlap significantly”
- Same content and instructor(s), but with different learning outcomes, readings/assignments, and grading rubric for the undergrads vs grad students
- Ex: ANTH 481 and 681, meet all together with different assignments and assessments
Note that it is possible to combine any of the above: For example, the group might contain both Concurrent and Cross-listed sections, which may also be dual-listed and/or stacked.
Ex: OCN 102 sect. 001-003, GES 102 sect. 001-003, SUST sect. 001-003.
