 How to change to or declare the Major

Fill out the Student Section of the CNS Major Declaration Form and submit the form on the CNS Forms Page.

How to Apply

Applications are open to i) undergraduate students, ii) unclassified students (and professionals).

Students should declare their intention to pursue the certificate as early as possible by registering here so that they can be assigned an advisor, and added to the program mailing lists for special events, guest speakers, employment opportunities. It will also help us better adapt class sizes to meet demand. 

When students are ready to graduate, they must file a verification of Minor or Certificate form with their respective college:

How to Apply

  1. Applicants must have completed a calculus course that covers limits, derivatives, partial derivatives, and integrals.
  2. Applicants must have completed a programming course that covers basic data types, program control structure, and functions.
  3. Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 3.0.
  4. Applicants are ineligible for the certificate if they already have a B.S. in CS or Math with the Data Science specialization. Similarly, students with a certificate in Data Science from UH Hilo are ineligible.
How to Register
This program is open to: (1) unclassified students (professionals), and (2) undergraduate students in any department. Students should declare their intention to pursue the certificate as early as possible by registering here. This will allow us to add you to the program mailing lists for advising, special events, and employment opportunities. It will also help us better adapt class sizes to meet demand.
 
Students at UH do not need to apply. After taking the required courses, they can request the certificate from the Department of Information & Computer Sciences. They will need to meet with the ICS undergraduate advisor to go over the certificate verification form. It is highly encouraged to meet with the ICS undergraduate advisor at the beginning of your studies to create an academic plan to complete the certificate requirements. 

Verification
When students are ready to graduate, they must file a Verification of Minor or Certificate form with the ICS Academic Advisor, Kenny Quibilan (kennydq@hawaii.edu).

Requirements

Students pursuing this degree should meet the degree requirements for a regular Master of Science in Computer Science. Gateway course: ICS 311 with a grade B or higher.

To be admitted into the program, students must submit the Graduate Admissions Applications as well as all required program admission materials specified in the “Graduate Study” section by the start of their junior year (5th semester).

Tawanza Farmer, GA Advisor

My name is Tawanza Farmer! I am a Graduate Assistant Advisor for the Information & Computer Science Department. I’m an alumna of UH Mānoa with a Bachelor’s of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies. I am currently working on my Master’s degree in the Department of Second Language Studies with an interest in second language acquisition through technology.

I started learning Korean in 2017 with mobile apps and it sparked my interest in learning how people learn languages in today’s digital world. Ever since I was young I’ve traveled a lot and been interested in experiencing diverse cultures. So far I’ve traveled to Mexico, Aruba, the Bahamas, Spain, France, the United Kingdom, Italy, Czechia,Thailand,South Korea, Japan ,and China. When I have free time I love exploring new boba shops and dessert cafés.

I’m really looking forward to connecting with you and helping you on your academic journey. I really appreciated all the support I received from everyone right from the beginning of transferring to UH and I hope to pay it forward by assisting you to the fullest of my ability!

My name is Katelynn Crouch, and I am currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science with hopes of entering the field of data science. As a peer advisor, I’m excited to support fellow students in navigating their academic journeys and finding resources that make the college experience more rewarding.

I’m known for being kind, understanding, and always eager to help. I love art, music, traveling, and staying active through the gym, beach days, and hiking.

With extensive knowledge of ICS extracurriculars, I hope to connect students to valuable opportunities, empower them to succeed and help boost their confidence as they navigate college. Hi, I’m Lukas! I’m a senior majoring in Computer Science on the general track. Outside of school, I enjoy biking and cooking. I’m excited to serve as a student advisor for the ICS program and look forward to helping as many students as possible. I’m in the POST building a lot, so feel free to say hi if you see me around!

Angela Joy Almeron, Mānoa Peer Advisor

Student Population: 60 Credits or Less

My name is Angela Joy, but I go by Angela. I am a Mānoa Peer Advisor for the Information & Computer Science Department! I was born and raised in the Philippines and moved to Hawai’i at the age of 10. During my free time, I enjoy reading comic books (specifically manhwa) and novels, playing video games, drawing or painting, and spending quality time with friends and family!

I am currently working towards obtaining my Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and considering pursuing a Master's degree in Computer Science. I am currently still open to career interests, but I hope to narrow them more as I progress.

As a peer advisor, I am dedicated to supporting students in ways that address their needs, provide guidance, and offer resources to empower them to succeed in their academic journey and beyond. I aim to ensure that students have a strong foundation that will support them as they progress through their education and future careers.
