Sherwood Maynard Award
The Sherwood Maynard Award, established by Dr. Sherwood Maynard, is awarded each year to the highest-performing second-year student participating in QUEST, the Quantitative Underwater Ecological Surveying Techniques field course offered through the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo.
Dr. Sherwood Maynard, MOP Director from 1980 – 2007, developed MOP into the program you see today. He was responsible for creating the QUEST and Maritime Archaeology Surveying Techniques field courses, the Graduate Ocean Policy Certificate (now through Geography), the Maritime Archaeology and History Certificate, the Maritime Archaeology Symposium, and the Blue Water Marine Lab. Dr. Maynard mentored ocean-loving students for nearly three decades, worked as a tireless advocate for MOP, and embodied the values of the Marine Option Program—passion for the ocean, enthusiasm for teaching, and stewardship of the marine environment.

Anna Toy Ng Memorial MOP Scholarship
The Anna Toy Ng Memorial MOP Scholarship is provided by a generous donation from MOP alumna Elizabeth Ng and was created in memory of her mother, Anna Toy Ng. The scholarship is presented to a MOP student who exhibits excellence in marine scholarship, ocean stewardship, and contributions to MOP.
Potential candidates for the scholarship must be current MOP students in good standing, and can be nominated by MOP staff, alumni, and current students. Each spring, the scholarship selection committee, comprised of the MOP Director and campus MOP Coordinators, makes its selection based on the criteria of motivation, enthusiasm, participation, personal investment in MOP, and ocean stewardship.
