Responsible Entity: OVCAA

Policy Language

There are four basic components to baccalaureate degree programs at UH Mānoa: (a) the General Education core requirements; (b) the General Education graduation requirements (focus and second language); (c) individual college or school requirements; and (d) an academic specialization comprising a major, specific degree requirements, as well as a minor or electives that complement the other requirements.

Second degree candidates, who have earned their first baccalaureate degree from an institution accredited by a U.S. regional accrediting association, must meet admissions requirements for the appropriate school or college and must fulfill the following minimum requirements:

  • Completion of the college/school, academic specialization, and degree requirements, and graduation requirements for the second degree program.
  • Completion of the general education graduation requirements as follows:
    • Focus Courses: The pro-‐rata schedule for transfer students with non-‐UH system credits in effect at the time of admission to the second degree program will apply.
    • Completion of second language requirement, if required by the second degree program.
  • Completion of (1) a minimum of 30 credits in residence at UH Mānoa after admission to the second degree program and (2) all college/school and academic specialization residency requirements.

Moreover, courses used to satisfy major requirements in the first degree program cannot be used to satisfy major requirements in the second degree program, unless specific courses are required by both programs. In addition, the same major cannot be pursued in the second degree program.

Second degree students are admitted to UH Mānoa as undergraduate students. Priority for admission and registration is given to students seeking their first undergraduate degree. Second degree candidates whose first degree is not from a regionally accredited higher education institution in the United States are required to meet all requirements for the UH Mānoa degree, including general education core requirements.
