Complaints and Grievances

Complaints and Grievances

  • Complaints: Violations of UH Policy (i.e. Workplace Nonviolence, E9.210, Title IX, EEO) or procedure – either can be a written or unwritten complaint.
    • Informal Complaints: is a general act of bringing awareness to a situation
    • Formal Complaints: is an allegation specific to a violation of an UH policy, and the complainant is seeking formal redress under the policy
      • Please note, some formal complaints can be addressed in an informal manner, but the assessment will be made at the Dean/Director level
    • To asses whether to go informal or formal, please review the Complaint Assessment (Informal vs. Formal) workflow
  • Grievances: Violations of Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBA) (i.e. Violations of Article IV in UHPA CBA)
    • The grievance process is outlined by the respective CBA
  • The University encourages all employees to consider Alternative Dispute Resolutions (ADR) using methods that include, but are not limited to, facilitation, mediation, and or workplace audits. Studies indicate that the use of ADR methods will help foster a better work environment. Please contact our office if you are interested in ADR methods.
