Exciting New Funding Opportunity for UH Mānoa Undergraduates Conducting International Research or Creative Work in Summer 2025
UROP is thrilled to announce a new funding opportunity for undergraduate students engaging in research or creative work projects abroad in Summer 2025. Thanks to a generous grant from the Tyler Center for Global Studies (Tyler Center), UROP will provide select UH Mānoa Tyler Fellows with funding ranging from $1,000 to $5,000 to support their summer endeavors.
This funding opportunity is open to undergraduate students across all disciplines and will enable participants to work on research or creative work scholarships internationally. Students will collaborate with their mentors to develop and execute projects, thereby gaining invaluable hands-on experience while immersing themselves in new cultural environments. Selected students will receive up to $5,000 on an individual basis (no group projects allowed for this funding) to cover essential costs, including travel, housing, and research-related expenses, ensuring that this opportunity is accessible to students regardless of financial background. UROP plans to provide a total of $20,000 in funding for Summer 2025.
“UROP is very excited to bring this new funding opportunity to our campus. With increasing numbers of UH Mānoa undergraduates requesting funding from a fixed pool of available scholarship funds that our office manages, any new funding opportunity is a plus for our students and our campus. This opportunity is particularly exciting in that it will provide the opportunity for our students across all disciplines to conduct international scholarship,” said Dr. Creighton Litton, Director of UROP. “We are very grateful to the Tyler Center for supporting our undergraduate students’ research and creative work in such a meaningful way.” added Tim Dolan, CEO of the University of Hawaiʻi Foundation (UHF).
Applications for the UH Mānoa Tyler Fellowship will open on February 2, 2025 and are due on March 3, 2025. To apply, please review UROP’s Tyler Fellowship webpage for details and submit a: (i) Project Funding Application; (ii) Project Pre-Survey; and (iii) Tyler Fellowship Application by the March 3 deadline. Competitive applications will consist of a detailed research or creative work proposal developed in collaboration with an eligible UH Mānoa mentor, and demonstrate how their proposed project aligns with the goals of the Tyler Fellowship program (e.g., a desire to cultivate global awareness and evidence of a high level of the student’s dedication to their field of study). Proposals should highlight the significance of the research/creative work, its potential impact, and the value of conducting the work in an international context.
In addition to funding, awardees will receive support from the UHM Study Abroad Center (SAC) throughout the preparation and execution of their projects. The SAC specializes in comprehensive overseas academic program delivery, including student health, safety, security, risk assessment, and management through a variety of means including on-site inspection and program evaluations. As part of SAC’s standard of care, participating students and mentors will receive pre-travel cross-cultural and risk-management training.
The Tyler Fellowship Is more than just an academic opportunity—it’s a chance to make a meaningful impact on the global stage. Whether exploring solutions to pressing environmental issues, investigating cultural practices, or advancing technological innovation, participants will contribute to knowledge while developing lifelong skills in an international setting.
Don’t miss this chance to broaden your academic and personal horizons! For more details, visit UROP’s Tyler Fellowship webpage and contact urop@hawaii.edu for any questions.
