Dr. Alec Schumacker joins the University of Hawai‘i’s Music Department this fall as conductor of the University Chorus. Joining Dr. Miguel Felipe, director of choral activities, and Nola Nāhulu, Schumacker brings a wealth of experience to the choral area. Schumacker is the choral teacher at Sacred Hearts Academy in Honolulu, a position he’d held since 2013, and previously served as the interim director of the Master Chorale of South Florida, a staff conductor for the Miami Choral Academy, the director of the Ocean Reef Chapel Choir, and the co-conductor of the University of Miami Maelstrom Men’s Ensemble.
“I’m ecstatic to begin teaching at Mānoa,” said Schumacker. “The members of the music faculty are impressive, talented, and accomplished, and the student body is of a high quality as well. I can’t wait to start!” Speaking about the new addition, Dr Miguel Felipe, Mānoa’s director of choral activities, was equally excited, “Alec brings skills as a conductor, composer/arranger, and pedagogue. He’ll be a welcome addition to our faculty and a wonderful new resource to our students, singers and education students.”
Schumacker begins the last week of August with the University Chorus. Their first performance under Schumacker will be PSALM on Friday, November 20, 2015.
