Maxwell S. Doty Papers

Dr. Maxwell S. Doty taught at the University of Hawaiʻi‘s Department of Botany for over forty years. During his tenure as Professor and Professor Emeritus he helped to pioneer the farming of the commercially important seaweed Eucheuma. His teachings, publications and research greatly helped to advance the science of marine agronomy worldwide. It is estimated that the commercial seaweed industry that he was primarily responsible for developing in the Philippines is worth approximately $100 million annually.

(This biographical information was provided by David Coleman, former Librarian in the Science and Technology Department at UH Mānoa’s Hamilton Library.)

The Maxwell S. Doty papers were donated to the University Archives by his wife, Mrs. Meng Sung Doty, in 1995. Through the generosity of the Library’s Science and Technology Department, the Archives benefited from the service of Ms. Patricia Brandes, who arranged the papers and prepared the inventory under the direction of the University Archivist.
