What do you need to be a strong candidate for physical therapy school?
Three key factors that physical therapy (PT) schools are looking for:
- Strong academic performance: A high GPA in prerequisite and upper-division science coursework can show schools you are prepared for their curriculum.
- Evidence of experience and personal development: PT experience can help you determine whether PT is the right fit. Your experiences (both related and unrelated to health) can also show schools that you have the qualities they are looking for in a future PT.
- Strong entrance exam scores (if applicable): Like your GPA, your entrance exam score can suggest that you are ready for the rigor of PT school.
More information on each factor can be found in their respective sections below.
Most importantly, remember that requirements vary by school! You must research to create a list of all the prerequisites needed to apply to the schools you are interested in attending.
Physical Therapy (DPT) Program Information: We compiled some information on the DPT programs in the US. Please note that we still recommend you to do your own research alongside this guide.
Physical Therapist Centralized Application Service (PTCAS) Program Directory: A complete list of DPT programs and their requirements (healthcare experience hours, standardized exams, prerequisite coursework, GPA, etc.) is available via the Physician Assistant Education Association (PAEA). This is a resource by the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA).
More than 25% of the programs in this field require the following UHM courses for admission:
BIOL 171/171L and 172/172L | Introduction to Biology I and II | 8 cr. |
CHEM 161/161L and 162/162L | General Chemistry I and II* | 8 cr. |
PHYS 151/151L and 152/152L (or PHYS 170/170L and 272/272L) |
College Physics I and II (or General Physics I and II) |
8 or 9 cr. |
MATH 140 or higher | Precalculus or higher* | 3 cr. |
BIOL/BOT 220**, ECON 321, or PSY/SOCS 225 | Statistics | 3 cr. |

Please note that if you retake courses because PT schools may not accept Advanced Placement (AP), online, or community college credit, your financial aid and/or scholarship status may be affected.
Additional requirements may include CPR certification and courses such as kinesiology (KRS 305, 353, 415, 416, 419, 420, 421, or 463), social sciences, and humanities. It is also recommended that non-science majors take additional upper-division or advanced science electives beyond the prerequisites listed above.

CHEM 171/171L might not be accepted by physical therapy schools in place of CHEM 161/161L and 162/162L. Students should double-check with the schools they are interested in if the schools would accept CHEM 171/171L in place of CHEM 161/161L and 162/162L.
*If you are planning on taking a chemistry or math course for the first time, please make sure to fulfill the placement exam requirement before registration.
**Students pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Biology or Marine Biology from Fall 2021 and on are required to take BIOL/BOT 220 as a major requirement.
*** KRS 354/354L is a major restricted course. Its prerequisites are KRS 113 or PHYL 103 or PHYL 142/142L (or concurrent), or BIOL 171/171L (or concurrent). To enroll, complete the KRS 354/354L prerequisites and email the instructor for an override. More seats may be available during the spring and summer semesters.
