Teaching an undergraduate course, from large introductory-level lecture classes to small, intensive discussion-focused seminars, can be one of the most rewarding areas of a faculty member’s career. In addition to keeping the content current, each iteration of a course may pose new challenges to improving various skills, nurturing the habits of mind of an educated citizenry, and encouraging student engagement both in and out of class. Here we offer a collection of resources intended to introduce faculty to different pedagogical approaches, direct you to external sites and collections of resources, and encourage you to take your teaching in new, thoughtful directions.

This area of our website is meant to be a living entity, frequently changing and growing to meet the developing needs of faculty across the UH System. We encourage you to explore, to submit other resources to different areas that you have found useful in your teaching, and to request resources where you see an unmet need.

Organization

The teaching resources are divided into three general categories.

  • Those grouped under Skills include the General Education areas of oral and written communication, as well as quantitative reasoning; core competencies of critical thinking and information literacy; and civic engagement and teamwork.
  • Content Areas are those in which curricular content complements a disciplinary-specific approach in shaping discussion and reading topics: Global and Multicultural perspectives, Ethical reasoning and issues, and Hawaiian, Asian and Pacific issues fall into this area.
  • The third category offers a variety of resources for improving Course Delivery, whether a course is offered through a traditional face-to-face format, distance education platforms, or hybrid instructional modalities. Don’t miss the wealth of resources on student engagement, creating a healthy and inclusive learning environment, new course design, innovative approaches to teaching, and more under Classroom.
