Frequently Asked Questions
What is New Student Advising?
New Student Advising is a great opportunity for each new student to prepare for their first semester at Mānoa. We provide Online Workshops to meet the needs of all of our students.
What happened to Summer Advising?
Summer Advising has been renamed New Student Advising so that we can help all students all year round!
I thought there was an On-Campus Workshop?
On-Campus Workshops were previously available, and will not be available this year. Instead, everything will be online for safety and convenience. However, students are still encouraged to meet with their academic advisor(s) upon completion of the Online Workshop.
If I have questions about New Student Advising, who can I contact?
You can email new.advising@hawaii.edu!
What does the Online Workshop include?
The Online Workshop includes a series of modules that are arranged in an order that best helps new students. Each module contains a video, links to helpful resources, and an activity to help ensure that you got the key points from the module. Each module should take no more than 15 to 20 minutes to complete, and that's only if it's a long one!
How much does it cost to participate in the Online Workshop?
All New Student Advising workshops are completely free. They just require a strong internet connection, and about 2 hours to complete.
How do I complete the Online Workshop?
The Online Workshop is undergoing a complete renovation! More details about how to access it will be available on the Online Workshop webpage.
When is the Online Workshop?
The Online Workshop is asynchronous. This means that it can be completed at your own pace. However, for students starting school in August, because registration for new students will be early in the summer, we strongly recommend completing it by the end of May.
How long will the Online Workshop take to complete?
There are some reflection components in the Online Workshop, so depending on how long each student spends on those pieces, the time to complete can vary. We find that 2 hours is a good amount of time to complete all of the modules. There are also additional bonus modules with extra information to help you feel more prepared for your first semester at UH Mānoa.
What if I don't know what to major in?
Mānoa has over 100 majors to choose from, and it can be overwhelming for new students. Explore the Mānoa Advising Guide website to see what majors we have. We also have an advising office just for students who are Exploratory, called the Mānoa Advising Center. If you still can’t decide, our online workshops are not major-specific, so it will be okay if you can’t decide just yet.
What if I put a major on my application but I changed my mind and want to major in something else?
Contact the advising office for the major that you are interested in, and they can further assist you. You can see a list of all majors and the offices that correspond to them on the Advising Guide website.
