Gagaku Moonviewing Concert

Hawaii Gagaku Society, under the direction of Reverend Masatoshi Shamoto, will present a concert to celebrate the full moon at the Barbara B. Smith Amphitheater. Gagaku is the oldest living tradition of orchestral music in the world. This concert will include three performance styles: Kangen (music with wind and string instruments), Bugaku (court dances), and Kagura (dances of the gods). This concert remembers the passing in 2015 of Pak Hardja Susilo, the founding director of the University of Hawai‘i Gamelan Ensemble. When a Javanese person passes away, it is customary for family and friends to observe a series of official commemorations, the last occurring one thousand days after the passing.
