UH Mānoa is designated as Research 1 (R1): Very High Spending and Doctorate Production in the 2025 Research Activity Designations of the Carnegie Classifications of Institutions of Higher Education, which requires institutions to spend at least $50 million on research and development and award at least 70 research doctorates annually.
UH Mānoa is one of only three universities in the US that is designated as a land-grant, sea-grant, space-grant, and sun-grant institution.
