NSSE 2020 Survey Administration

What is the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE)?

NSSE is the most popular undergraduate student survey in the U.S. Since 2000, over 1,600 colleges and universities have participated in the survey and approximately 5 million students have completed the survey, administered by the Indiana University School of Education, Center for Post-secondary Research. This survey collects data from first-year and senior students on learning and engagement related practices and activities.

Who can participate?

At UH Mānoa, a number of freshman and senior students are being invited to complete the survey.

How do I complete the survey?

Search your Hawaii.edu email account for the keyword “NSSE” on or after February 11. If you are included in the survey sample, you will have received an email invitation from Provost Michael Bruno containing a link to complete the survey online. Please also check your spam folder, just in case it has been filtered out of your inbox.

Prizes: All students who complete the survey by March 3, 2020 will be entered into a prize drawing for either 2 pairs of AirPods Pro (each worth $250), 15 bookstore gift cards (each worth $50), or 30 Starbucks gift cards (each worth $25)

When is the survey happening?

The survey administration period begins February 11. Students will be invited to participate via email from the Provost. Students who have not yet completed the survey will continue to receive 3 reminder emails on February 13, 18, & 24. The final invitation to participate will be emailed out on February 27.

Why should I take part?

Simply put, your participation makes a difference. It is a way for you to have a voice in your education, to let the university know what it is doing right, as well as identify areas for improvement.

How long will it take?

The online survey takes on average 8 minutes to complete.

If I have received an invitation, am I obliged to complete the survey?

Completion of the survey is entirely voluntary, and there will be no consequences for those who do not take part.

Will my responses be kept confidential?

Yes, your responses will be kept confidential within the university, although they are not anonymous. Only the aggregated data will be shared with campus decision makers.
