Use of Oral Communication Assessment Results

The Oral Communication (OC) Institutional Assessment project data collection completed in March 2018. From April 2018 to present, the Assessment and Curriculum Support Center (ACSC) collaborated with the campus major academic decision-makers and stakeholders to communicate the results regularly. Campus stakeholders have engaged in a series of improvement actions to modify policy and to provide professional development events for the purpose of improving teaching and learning in oral communication.

Communicating OC assessment results:

4/4/2018ACSC presented results to the OC board and facilitated the discussion on possible improvement actions.
1/29/2019ACSC presented the results to the OC board and offered ideas for collaboration.
1/24/2020The OC Board presented the results to faculty who are interested in seeking OC focus designation in a workshop.
9/8/2020ACSC presented results, improvement actions, and collaboration ideas to the OC board.

Major improvement actions:

A. Policy changes

  • Informed by the OC assessment results and resources provided by ACSC, the OC board has revised the OC Focus Proposal Form in 2021 to
    • request instructors to specify an assessment tool and the evaluation tool (evaluation tool or rubric)
    • have instructors check and explain the strategies they use to support successful completion of the assignments
    • request instructors to detail ways to provide feedback
    • request descriptions of lessons learned from assessment
  • In renewals of the OC focus designation for courses, ask Faculty to report what they have found effective in their courses.
  • The OC board has engaged in an ongoing discussion about possible General Education requirement policy change to enhance students’ oral communication skills from 2020 till present

B. Resource development

General Education OC resource development: General Education Office has compiled and published OC resources [UH login required] on their website for UH Manoa faculty and staff.

ACSC OC resource development: ACSC composed an inventory of resources to support teaching and learning in oral communication to inform decision-making and enhance teaching capacity.
