Mieke Doezema’s Research Receives College Music Society Student Paper Award

In Musicology, Student Accolades by General Entries

The Northwest Chapter meeting for the College Music Society met at Western Washington University on March 21 and 22, during which UH Mānoa music graduate student Mieke Doezema (Composition MA ‘25) was awarded the College Music Society Student Paper Award for her musicological presentation on rhythmic movement in martial arts. Under the mentorship of musicologist Dr. Elina G. Hamilton, Mieke has also presented her research at the American Musicological Society Pacific Southwest Chapter meeting at the University of California, Irvine, and at the International Graduate Student Conference held at the East West Center in Honolulu.

Hamilton notes that “Mieke’s research is highly original yet grounded in basic principles of music research and will undoubtedly shape future academic pursuits. Impressively, she has opened an entirely new scholarly investigation and research methodology on rhythm and music in martial arts, demonstrating clearly that the subject merits further study, development, and expansion. I cannot think of a more deserving graduate student to receive recognition for their research.”

Congratulations to Mieke!
