Program Terms:

Spring Semester & Academic Year

Overview:

The University of the Ryukyus was founded after the end of World War II in May 1950, in the remains of Shuri castle, when Okinawa was under American administration. The university is strongly invested in the local community and its reconstruction, as well as the global implications of the knowledge produced. Countering issues like social and regional disparity in line with the aims of a rapidly globalizing society, students at Ryukyus have the opportunity to make direct contributions to local and global communities. The University of the Ryukyus gained its present status as a national university when Okinawa was returned to Japan in May 1972.
