Welcome from the University Librarian

University Librarian, Clem GuthroWelina mai e nā hoa mai ka hiki ʻana a ke kau ʻana o ka lā.

Welcome! The Library at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa is an intellectual and cultural hub at the crossroads of campus. The Library’s world class collections and librarian and staff expertise enable the learning, teaching, research, and service activities of the university community. Whether you are a student writing your first research paper, a faculty member using digitized primary sources or large data sets, a graduate student exploring digital scholarship, or a visiting scholar drawn here by our extraordinary special collections, our librarians and staff are ready to connect you with the materials you need and lend their expertise to help you leverage new technologies to their full advantage.

As vital partners in the University’s research, teaching and learning, the Library supports UH Mānoa’s land-grant, sea-grant, and space-grant status enabling UH Mānoa to create, refine, disseminate, and perpetuate human knowledge. The Libraries build, sustain, and make discoverable print and digital collections; with more than 3.2 million print volumes, as well as archives and manuscripts, maps, rare books, audiovisuals, art, and millions of digital resources. The Library has world-class collections related to Hawai’i, Oceania, and the Pacific Islands, as well as China, Japan, Korea, Okinawa, the Philippines, Russia, South Asia, and Southeast Asia which support campus programs and researchers from across the globe. With a commitment to excellence, innovation, diverse ideas, global understanding, as well as western, non-western, and indigenous ways of knowing, we select and create, organize and protect, provide and teach access to resources that enable the creation of new knowledge in all its forms.

Everyone is welcome here. Everyone is encouraged to interact with one another in order to build a deeper and better understanding of each other, our cultures, and ideas. An outstanding university experience begins with an outstanding library experience. I hope you’ll make frequent use of the expertise of our librarians and staff, our world-class collections, and study spaces, all of which are all here to help you succeed.

I trust you will learn more about this wonderful Library by exploring our website, and visiting in person. I welcome your comments or suggestions about how we can make the Library even better.
