In October 2017, the Native Hawaiian Legal Corporation (NHLC) presented Ka Huli Ao Director Melody Kapilialoha MacKenzie with the 2017 Native Hawaiian Advocate Award at the Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement’s annual convention. NHLC Executive Director Moses K.N. Haia III noted Melody’s many years of work for the Kānaka Maoli community, in particular her research and writing in the field of Native Hawaiian law.

In September 2017, The Office of Hawaiian Affairs (OHA) finalized an agreement with Ka Huli Ao to continue the Aʻo Aku Aʻo Mai Initiative. The Initiative was created to provide access to justice for Native Hawaiians through legal education and direct legal services on issues of importance to the Native Hawaiian community.
