Resilient Hawaiian Communities Initiative Invites Communities to Join Initiative

Increasing Capacity to Plan for Changing Environmental Conditions

The Resilient Hawaiian Communities (RHC) Initiative announced that it opened its solicitation period for expressions of interest. RHC is inviting interested community representatives, including agencies, non-government organizations, or a hui of stakeholders, to apply to be one of two communities selected to participate in a community resiliency planning process.

The RHC Initiative is designed to support community resilience planning through a collaborative effort including a working group of expert organizations and individuals who are leaders in natural and cultural resource management, climate change science, and planning in Hawaiʻi. The communities will have technical, financial, and planning support to increase understanding, build capacity, and ultimately strengthen local and collective resiliency. Resources are designed to support community planning efforts through early-2019.

On behalf of the initiative, Co-Lead Ka Huli Ao Center for Excellence in Native Hawaiian Law’s Director Kapua Sproat shares, “we’re honored to be a part of this partnership and thrilled that the effort offers financial and technical support to our Native Hawaiian communities who are on the frontlines of the climate change battle. Our cultural practices and life ways are inextricably tied to Hawaiʻi’s natural resources, and this initiative focuses on planning with this connection and the underlying indigenous values at the core.”
