Ka Huli Ao and Island Girl Fund Award Three Native Hawaiian Law Summer Fellowships

Ka Huli Ao and the Island Girl Fund are pleased to announce our 2019 Summer Fellows in Native Hawaiian Law.  Three fellowship recipients will spend ten weeks during the summer honing their advocacy skills and knowledge of Native Hawaiian law to make a positive impact on the Native Hawaiian community. 

Rising third year law student Henderson Huihui will work at the Native Hawaiian Legal Corporation; rising second year law student Liʻipiʻilani Stevens Nāhiwa will assist Ka Huli Ao with updates to its Native Hawaiian Law Treatise; and rising second year law student Alexa Deike will gain hands-on experience working on land issues on Maui.

Ka Huli Ao director D. Kapuaʻala Sproat commented, “Ka Huli Ao is grateful to partner with the Island Girl Fund to support our law students as they gain invaluable lawyering and community building experiences in the Native Hawaiian community over the summer.  With this generous support from Island Girl, Ka Huli Ao can further its goals of mentoring the next generation to mālama natural and cultural resources for the generations yet to come.”

Island Girl Fund founder Teresa Tico added, “These law students are the front line in our work towards sustainability and self-sufficiency in an increasingly uncertain world.  They are brilliant, dedicated warriors and we must support them in every way we can.”

The Island Girl Fund was established to provide financial assistance to William S. Richardson Law students who have a sincere desire to protect and restore our natural resources for our future generations. With the impacts of climate change being experienced globally, it is critical that we, as communities, preserve and protect our land and water, locally.
