Oct. 2024 Native Hawaiian Law Training

With the support of the Office of Hawaiian Affairs, Ka Huli Ao hosted three Native Hawaiian Law Trainings in December 2023, May 2024, and October 2024. This training is designed for decisionmakers, including members of state and county boards, commissions, councils, and other bodies, and attendance is required for many who are appointed to serve in these important posts. Participants learned about Native Hawaiian laws that are critical to consider in decisionmaking, including the public land trust, traditional and customary rights, water and the public trust doctrine, iwi kūpuna (Native Hawaiian burials), and the trust duties of state and county entities. Participants also gained insight into Hawaiʻi’s historical and cultural context. To date, Ka Huli Ao has educated over 1,400 people throughout kō Hawaiʻi pae ʻāina. In 2025, we are working to transition this training into an online, asynchronous format.
