From L to R: presenters Kapua Sproat, Susan Serrano and Davianna McGregor
On Friday, June 7, 2019, Ka Huli Ao conducted the eighth Native Hawaiian Law Training Course since the signing of Act 169, which requires members of certain state boards, commissions, and councils to attend the training within twelve months of initial gubernatorial appointment. The training took place at the Orvis Music Auditorium on the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa campus in Honolulu, with approximately 100 people in attendance. Ka Huli Ao was honored to have Office of Hawaiian Affairs Vice-Chair and Trustee Brendon Kaleiʻāina Lee give introductory remarks and welcome attendees to the training. Hawaiʻi State Senator Kaialiʻi Kahele provided context as to why the training is important for decision-makers. Professors Davianna McGregor, Melody MacKenzie, Susan Serrano, Kapua Sproat, and Malia Akutagawa did presentations on Hawaiian History, the Public Land Trust, Traditional & Customary Rights, Water and the Public Trust Doctrine, and Iwi Kūpuna.
