Ka Huli Ao and the Department of Hawaiian Lands: Water Law & Advocacy Training for Hawaiian Homestead Communities

On Saturday June 2, 2018, Ka Huli Ao Center for Excellence in Native Hawaiian Law in partnership with the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands (DHHL) presented the second of ten I Mana I Ka Wai Water Law & Advocacy Trainings for Hawaiian homestead communities in Lahaina, Maui. Professor Kapua Sproat ’98, Post-JD Fellow Mahina Tuteur ’14, recent graduate Mahesh Cleveland ’18 and rising 3L Luʻukia Nakanelua ’19 presented on the rights and responsibilities of DHHL beneficiaries and discussed specific ways homestead communities can advocate for the pono use and protection of wai. DHHL also coordinated a site visit to its West Maui lands and water resources after the training for those who wanted to attend. The next training will be on June 16 in Haʻikū, Maui.
