On September 29 – October 1, students in the Fall 2017 Environmental Law Clinic went on a site visit to the Koʻolau and Haleleʻa moku of Kauaʻi. Students are assisting a community-driven effort that seeks to preserve access to a culturally significant historic trail, known as the Ala Loa (long path) or Ala Aupuni (old government road), and the traditional and customary Native Hawaiian practices dependent upon it.  Students visited parts of the ancient trail, listened to community members’ stories about subsistence practices at Lepeʻuli and Moloaʻa, heard a presentation from a Kauaʻi trail and history expert, met with local government officials, and engaged with community leaders to discuss desired outcomes.  Clinicians also invested a significant amount of time crafting potential legal strategies behind trail and access issues.
