- Part three of this discussion panel for the West Hawaiʻi community will build on previous discussions and focus on traditional and contemporary marine resource management. Uncle Mac Poepoe, a skilled Maoli fisherman, founder of Hui Mālama o Moʻomomi, and community leader on Molokaʻi, will share his experience spearheading the Lawaiʻa Pono movement and the effort to designate Moʻomomi as a Community Based Subsistence Fishing Area. Uncle Mac’s work at Moʻomomi has become a statewide example of the success of traditional management practices. Ka Huli Ao Center for Excellence in Native Hawaiian Law Professor Malia Akutagawa will discuss the evolution of contemporary marine resource management and relevant legal issues, including konohiki management.
