There are a variety of common areas (e.g., lobbies, recreation rooms, TV rooms, study rooms/lounges, and laundry rooms) intended for the use of the students living in the residence halls and apartments.
Use of these common area spaces must comply with Student Housing Services Community Standards as well as all other expectations set forth by the staff responsible for managing the space.
Programs and Events are planned in a variety of ways that align with our Residential Life Values and are designed to develop the whole person. As we know it, much of a student’s college experience occurs outside of the classroom, therefore, programs, activities, and events are designed to help students experience new things through social and educational interactions.
Information on these events will be communicated via your UH email as well as posted around your residence hall.
Residents are responsible for carrying their key(s) at all times and locking their door when they go out. The possession of keys by anyone other than the person they were issued to is prohibited. Residents are prohibited from “lending” any keys assigned to them to any other person, including their roommate(s). Residents are also prohibited from making or duplicating any key. Excessive lock-outs (contacting the hall staff for room/apartment entry) and/or replacement keys may result in conduct sanctions and charges. Refer to “Administrative and Damage Fee Sheet”. Violation of the resident key policy may result in a meeting and/or judicial action.
Key Replacement & Lockout
There are two instances where a resident may require a staff member’s assistance to access their room and is defined as either a Key Replacement or a Lockout; an administrative charge is associated with staff assistance in both instances.
- Key Replacement is when a resident loses their key card or doesn’t have their key card on hand, and needs a new key card made by the hall staff.
- Lockout is when a resident is locked out of their room after-hours from 8 PM – 8 AM (the next morning), and needs staff assistance to provide them entry into their room.
- During community desk hours a resident should go to the designated community desk of their building if they are locked out or have lost their room key to receive a key replacement. Find your building’s community desk and hours on the Housing Services page of the Student Housing Services website.
- After-Hours, when the community desks are closed, a resident should contact the RA On-Call of their community. On-call phone numbers are available on the Contact Us page of the Student Housing Services website.
Administrative Charges
- For the first three (3) key replacements/lockouts a cost of $5.00 will be assessed.
- Beginning with the fourth (4th) key replacement/lockout and onward, a cost of $15.00 will be assessed at each time.
- The administrative charge can only be waived when the resident has returned their old key (previously assigned key) within 24 hours after receiving their new replacement key card, or when the resident presents their current key upon the RA providing them entry into their room. Returning a key assigned to a different resident is not acceptable.
Each community has a common laundry facility area equipped with smart card or WASH-Connect App operated washers and dryers. The app is available for Android or iPhone, residents can download the app for free. Smart cards can be purchased from Add/Value machines (accepts $5, $10, $20) located in the following locations:
- Roof-top of ‘Ilima, Lehua, Lokelani, Mokihana
- 1st floor lobby of Laulima, Gateway, Frear
- Inside Wainani laundry room
REMEMBER: Never leave laundry unattended. Student Housing Services is not responsible for any lost, missing, or stolen laundry.
Refunds
Any requests for refunds or request for financial compensation will be made directly to the WASH Laundry company via their website: https://www.wash.com/refund-request/
Malfunctioning Machine
When encountering a malfunctioning machine, report this to the staff working the community desk or the staff on-duty. When reporting a malfunctioning machine, please note the location and machine number. Staff will submit a WASH ticket for the malfunctioning machine and take care of it. Do not submit a Pilikia for WASH issues.

Residents are responsible for taking their trash down to the trash dumpsters located outside the building. Each hall has a recycling receptacle area with limited items that are recyclable. Frear Hall and Wainani F/I residents may also take their trash to the trash chutes located on each floor; when it is open. Bulky items must be disposed of in the exterior trash dumpsters, and not in the chute.
Each resident unit is supplied with trash cans/wastebaskets. Any missing trash can/wastebaskets may be charged to the resident(s) assigned to the room.
Due to health and safety reasons, residents may not leave any items (including, but not limited to trash cans/bags, bottles, shoes, hibachis, etc.) in the hallways/lanais outside their rooms/apartments. All trash should be kept inside the resident’s unit until the resident is able to take it to the trash dumpster or chutes.
Residents should keep common area bathrooms and other common areas clean and clear of trash; responsible person(s) may be charged.
There are designated moped parking and racks to park bikes and scooters (manual/electric) near all the buildings.
Frear Hall has a bike cage; a secure, fenced-off parking enclosure for storing bike/scooter (manual/electric) and surfboards, and moped/motorcycle parking (permit required). The bike cage prioritizes Frear Hall residents, and will be advertised to residents in other residence halls afterwards. See the advertisement of vacancies via email.
