Nathaniel serves as the Seed Conservation Lab Manager at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānōa’s Lyon Arboretum. Currently, his research is focused on examining seed trait evolution and exploring what factors are related to desiccation tolerance. As well as looking at the evolutionary convergence of recalcitrant, or desiccation-sensitive, seeds of endemic Hawaiian species and how the production and function of plant hormones regulate seed physiology. Nathaniel’s background is in Evolutionary Biology and curation management from the University of Tennessee, where his work was focused on conducting phylogenetic analysis of DNA sequences to reconstruct species relationships and taxonomic distinctions of bryophytes, fungi, and vascular plants.
