Checkout, Renew, Return, and Fines

Checkout
Present a current University of Hawaii ID at checkout.

  • Hamilton Library General Collections – 1st floor Hamilton Library
  • Hawaiian Pacific Materials – 5th floor Hamilton Library
  • Closed, Rare, and Archives – 5th floor addition (Moir Rm) Hamilton Library
  • Government Documents – 1st floor Hamilton Library
  • Audiovisual materials and Course Reserves – 1st floor Hamilton Library

You can request that a book be retrieved from the stacks or recalled for you by placing a request in OneSearch.

Items requested will be held at the pickup branch that you specify and notification by email/mail when the item is available.

Assistance is available at any Circulation Desk or by phone Hamilton Library (956-7203).

Renew

    • Renew items BEFORE due date
    • Bring items to renew in person at the circulation counter
    • Renew online through MY ACCOUNT on library website
      • Go to MY ACCOUNT on library website
      • Log in with username and Password
      • Place Check mark in the box to the left of book title
      • Click RENEW
      • New due date should be shown on right side of the book title
    • If you are blocked from renewing an item, please return the item to the library. Circumstances that block an item renewal include:
      • The item has been requested by another borrower, there is a hold on the item.
      • You are blocked from borrowing for non-payment of fines or fees. Check your My Account page.
      • Your borrower’s card has expired or needs to be re-registered.
      • The renewal limit for your borrower status or the item’s status has been reached.
      • Item is on reserve or pending reserve.
      • Media item has been scheduled for a classroom showing.
    • Renewal Limits by patron groups are included under Borrowing Privileges and Access

*Course reserves maybe checked out again after a period of time once returned. Inquire at the Hamilton Library Circulation Desk.

Return

  • Return items in person at any UH Campus Library.
  • After hours book drops available at the Hamilton Library book drop, near the entrance area.
  • Materials returned to library book drops after hours will be credited for the previous business day
  • Items return via mail will be checked in for the date the books are received by the library

Overdue Fines
Payments may be made at any UH System Library. Payments made at UH Manoa can be made at the Business Office at Hamilton Library. Credit Card Payments can also be made by phone at (808) 956-7203. For check payments – write out check to UH Library and mail to:

Fines Rates

As of August 02, 2021, UH System Libraries eliminated overdue fines for most items. This policy only applies to daily fines for main collection books.  Overdue fines will still be assessed for the following:

  • AV Collection Materials
  • Course Reserves
  • Hawaiian Pacific and Special Collection Materials
  • Loanable Technology
  • Recalled Books
  • Special Permission Books

To facilitate the prompt return of library materials, fines are assessed at the following rates:

Main Collection Books No daily fines. Designated ‘Lost’ at 40 days overdue
Recalled Books $0.50 per day
Special Permission $0.50 per day
Hawaiian Pacific and Special Collections $0.50 per day
Audiovisual Materials $1.00 per day
Course Reserves $1.00 per hour or fraction thereof
Loanable Technology $1.00 per day
  • Course reserve fines are assessed hourly including weekends and holidays.
  • When fines reach $10.00, borrowing privileges are stopped.
  • Borrowing privileges are reinstated when fines are paid.

Lost item Fines and Fees
An item is considered “Lost” when overdue fines reach $10.00 or the item is 40 days overdue.  A “Lost” status is automatically placed on the item record and “Lost item” charges are placed on the patron’s account.

Main Collection Books Automatically Lost when 40 days overdue
At $0.50 per day Lost when 20 days overdue
At $1.00 per day Lost when 10 days overdue
At $1.00 per hour Lost when 10 hours overdue

LOST charges may include:

Lost Item Replacement Cost $60.00 or listed cost
Lost ILL Replacement Cost Fee (Effective August 20, 2018) $100 minimum
Non-Refundable Lost Item Processing Fee $10.00
Overdue Fees $10.00

Replacement copy MAY be accepted for lost UHM items and must be approved by selector. Visit or call our Hamilton Library Business Office for more information.
