Finding Audio Recordings with OneSearch

Transcript

This video will summarize the steps for finding audio recordings such as compact discs and phonodiscs using OneSearch.

Hamilton Library has phonodisc players available to patrons, which are located on the first floor of the main building past the Business Office.

To use a phonodisc player, please check out a stylus at the Circulation Desk.

Audio discs from another campus typically cannot be requested to be delivered to Hamilton Library.

If you want to borrow a compact disc from another campus, contact the library at that campus to see if it is possible to get the item in person.

Hamilton Library also subscribes to online music sources such as “Classical Music Library” which are not covered in this tutorial and can be accessed through the Databases link on the main library page.

Online resources are not covered in this video.

To search for an audio recording, go to the Advanced Search in OneSearch.

If you are on the main Hamilton Library webpage, https://manoa.hawaii.edu/library, a link to the Advanced Search is located just above the basic search box.

In the Advanced Search enter the information about the audio recording in the first box and leave the field at “All Fields”.

We will search for the Beatles.

If you want to perform more complicated searches, you can add additional terms in the other fields.

Click on the “material type” pop-up menu and select “Sound Recordings.”

If you want material held by Hamilton library, click on “This Library” at the top of the search area.

Click on the “Search” button.

Notice in the results that there are some sound recordings that are available online through Hamilton Library.

Most of the results indicate that the material is either a COMPACT DISC or a PHONODISC.

Locate the item you want and click on the title.

In this case we will click on the first item.

If you are physically in Hamilton Library, you can request the item by going to the Circulation Desk and giving them the CD or phonodisc number.

In this case, we would request Compact Disc 5180.

You can also request compact discs online and we will have them waiting at the Circulation Desk for you the following day.

Phonodiscs and audio tapes can only be requested in person at the Circulation Desk.

To request the item online, you first need to log in to OneSearch by clicking on the “Sign in” button and logging in using your UH username and password.

You may have to do a second stage of authentication.

Then, the process is slightly different depending on whether we have only one or more than one copy.

If the library has several copies, click on one of the copies and then click on the “request” button.

If the library has one copy, click on the “Request Specific Copy” button.

Then, complete the request form.

Select the pick-up institution, which will be “University of Hawaii at Manoa.”

Select the pick-up location, which will be “UH Hamilton Library.”

Finally, click on the “Send Request” button.

The audio recording should be available at the Hamilton Library Circulation Desk the following morning.

Please check your UH email for an “On Hold Shelf” notice.

If you have any questions regarding our audio collection, please contact the Reference Desk at (808) 956-7214 or by email at emailref@hawaii.edu.

When available, you can also use the Chat Reference tool located on the bottom right of the library website.
