Through the Time and Spirit: The Early Buddhist Murals of Dunhuang
September 3, 2024-January 10, 2025
Location: Asia Collection
繪筆傳神:敦煌佛教壁畫之美
Situated at the crossroads of the ancient Silk Road, Dunhuang is renowned for its extraordinary Buddhist art that flourished from the 4th to the 14th century. The vibrant and intricate murals of Dunhuang offer profound insights into the spiritual and cultural exchanges at this historic meeting point.
The murals are broadly divided into three stages—beginning, climax, and decline—each reflecting the distinct characteristics of its time. This exhibit focuses on the early period (4th-6th century) of mural painting, highlighting the unique artistic techniques, vivid narratives, and evolving styles that exemplify the enduring legacy of Dunhuang art.
Through the exhibit and the opening talk in late September, we invite you to explore Dunhuang art's unique connections to the broader artistic traditions of Asia.
