The Preservation of Japanese Books

Japanese Documents

April 17, 2017-April 29, 2017
Location: Lobby Display

This exhibition explains physical aspects of the pre-20th century Japanese books that were almost exclusively produced by wood-block printing, printed on handmade Japanese paper, and bound in side-stitched binding with soft paper covers. The exhibit focuses on their composition and materials such as types of paper, printing methods and binding forms.

It also shows damage and their causes most commonly seen in these types of books. We hope this exhibition will inspire your curiosity about these old materials, elevate your appreciation for them, and help us to ensure their long-term preservation.
