Francis Haar's Hawaii Years, 1960-1997

November 13, 2008-December 31, 2008
Location: Bridge Gallery
The exhibit, FRANCIS HAAR'S HAWAII YEARS - 1960-1997, celebrates the Library's receipt of the gift of photographer Francis Haar's Hawaii negatives, proofs, selected prints and associated materials. Donated by his son, Tom Haar, the gift is a major resource concerning life and the arts in Hawaii during the second half of the 20th century. It is housed in the Jean Charlot Collection as part of the Archive of Hawaii Artists. The exhibition touches upon some of Haar's favorite themes - hula, artists of Hawaii, portraits of children and others, disappearing Honolulu, changing and changeless landscapes-and some of his work reflects his long friendship with artist Jean Charlot.
Preservation and organization of the gift was supported by the Hawaii Council for the Humanities, the Cooke Foundation, the First Hawaiian Bank Foundation and the Jean Charlot Foundation.
