April 1, 2020-May 31, 2020
Location: Asia Collection

Bound by Tradition: Physical Bibliography of East Asian bookbinding explores the physical bibliography of traditional Chinese, Korean and Japanese stab-binding books, highlighting paper production and bookbindings. This exhibit includes fourteen items from the Asia Collection in the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, including books, paper samples, and an example of an original 19th-century Japanese carved woodblock. We also developed a pathfinder in conjunction with the exhibit so that patrons can opt to deepen their understanding of the featured books and archival materials. Please enjoy, and feel free to reach out to us about anything!

We want to offer our thanks to the staff of Hamilton Library's Asia Collection, Preservation Department, and Exhibit Committee at Thomas Hale Hamilton Library, who supported and guided us while we developed this exhibit. Its contents can be credited to University of Hawai'i MLIS students Fiona Collins, Minyoung Chung, and Yoko Nagamine.
