The first Russian language classes were taught in 1934 by Denzel Carr. He stayed at UH until 1940. After WWII, Ella Wiswell resumed classes, and established the Russian language undergraduate program in 1962. Since 1992, UH has had a summer intensive Russian language program in Vladivostok.
