Awards Information

Thanks to the generosity of alumni and supporters of History, the History Department is able to award numerous annual scholarships and grants, as well as support for special projects on an application basis.

Graduate Student Scholarships & Grants

For more information about these awards and to apply, use the STAR scholarship portal, which opens annually for applications from November 15 until February 15.

Note: These awards are restricted to full-time graduate students at UH Mānoa.

  • Barbara Bennett Peterson Graduate Student Support Fund: To assist graduate students in History with meeting the costs of attendance (e.g., tuition, books, fees, etc.).
  • Jerry H. Bentley Endowed Scholarship in World History: To support graduate students studying world history, with a preference for PhD students.
  • John F. Kennedy Memorial Fellowship in History: To assist PhD students with dissertation research travel, writing, or other professional activity.
  • Daniel W. Y. Kwok Endowed Fund: To fund research and other expenses of completion of dissertation for MA and PhD degrees, with a preference for Asian history.
  • James M. McCutcheon Memorial Endowed Scholarship for History: For first-year MA students in History or American Studies with preference to American History.
  • Jagdish P. Sharma Memorial Scholarship: To assist graduate students who are pursuing studies on the South Asia region and its people in meeting the costs of attendance (e.g., tuition, books, fees, etc.).

Undergraduate Student Scholarships

  • Ishi Sakurai Scholarship Fund for students in Asian History: Apply via STAR and see here for more information.
  • Taraknath Das Prize for Undergraduate Excellence in the field of Asiatic studies, including but not exclusive to India. Selected via faculty nomination; please inquire with your instructor.

Funds for Meritorious Achievement, Special Projects, and/or Research or Conference-Related Travel
