Oral Communication in General Education courses

In fall 2017, we aim to collect 35 to 80 video-recorded student oral presentations from Oral Communication (OC) designated general education courses. In combination with the 41 video-recorded presentations collected in spring 2017, our goal is 75-120 recordings.

We have randomly selected 52 OC courses and 513 students to participate in the fall 2017 institutional OC assessment. We sent invitations to selected instructors at the end of October 2017.

You may participate even if you were not initially selected. All instructors are welcome to participate provided that their oral presentation assignment meets our collection criteria:

  • Length: 5-20 minutes
  • Purpose: to persuade or inform
  • Language: English
  • Assignment specifies an intended audience
  • Students present in a live setting
  • Presentation includes supporting material (e.g., evidence, primary/secondary sources to support claims, graphs, charts, materials, visual aids to support presentation)

In collaboration with the General Education Office, Institutional Learning Objectives Implementation Committee, OC experts, and experienced OC instructors, the Assessment Office is offering a workshop on Oral Presentation Assignment Design Strategies that includes practical and effective pedagogical strategies to help students develop oral presentation skills and the strategies used by Mānoa faculty members. Yao Hill, from the Assessment Office, will be the workshop facilitator and Halina Zalski, Professor of Human Nutrition, Food and Animal Sciences, will be the workshop’s guest speaker.
